Once every year, thousands and thousands of students took part in the
Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to gain admission into
Nigerian Universities, Polytechnic and College of Education.
The huge number of candidates who bought the form coupled with other
logistic problems makes conducting the jamb examination a big challenge for the
examination officials and the candidates. Most of the problems that spurt up include.
Insufficient materials that later lead to missing results and script.
But to solve this issue, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and
Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Dibu Ojerinde announced on the 3rd October
2012, that three(3) options would be introduced for the 2013/2014
JAMB/UTME. They are:
1.) Paper and Pencil Testing (PPT),
2.) Dibu Based Test (DBT), where questions would be presented on
computers and answers would be on paper.
3.) Computer Based Testing (CBT) where both questions and answers would
be done on computer.
About the second option, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde called the test after his
own name. Probably he want his name to live after him. Who doesn’t?
Prof. Dibu Ojerinde stated that candidates are allowed to choose one of
the three options in the 2013/2014
UTME
Prof. Dibu Ojerinde said candidates who chose the CBT option would get
their scores a few minutes after writing the examination on their mobile cell
phones.
Quoting Prof. Dibu Ojerinde he told DailyTimes
“The internet age has come to stay with us hence as actors in the new age, you cannot afford to stay on the fence, you must be prepared to join the train or else you are left behind,”
“The internet age has come to stay with us hence as actors in the new age, you cannot afford to stay on the fence, you must be prepared to join the train or else you are left behind,”
JAMB is trying to be on target, so to say. But the main question is; are
they (JAMB) prepared to conduct Computer Based Tests for the thousands and
thousands of students who might opt for the new methods in the next Jamb
2013/2014 Exam?
According to the files, a total number of 1,503,931 candidates sat for
the UTME in the 2012/2013 JAMB/UTME exam. Though the exams were all Paper and
Pencil Testing, the record shows they encounter too many obstacles.
Will JAMB able to conduct a flawless computer based examination for her
candidates? Most states don’t have the capacity to provide computers that will
carter for the entire candidates assuming they opt for the CBT.
